1.6 TIMELINE
Character Event or Thing
What it symbolized to Orwell
What it symbolized for me
Napoleon:
external image AFW%20Goebel%20Napoleon.jpg
Joseph Stalin, the second leader of the Soviet Union, who took over as leader of Russia when Nicolas II left.
external image 14526917.jpg
Napoleon for me symbolizes my mom. Like Napoleon, she tries to dictate my whole life sometimes. She also covers up and lies about somethings.
Cat
external image lolcatinfiltra128559110009361336.jpg
There are many theorys to whom the cat represents. One is that it represents the shadier people in Russia,(like gypsies and con men)because she leaves when things get bad and comes back when things get better.
external image the-gypsy-traveler_gypsy.jpg
To me, the cat represents the 'bad friends' that are only around when things in your life are good. When things get heavy, they leave.
The Other Pigs
external image four-pigs-500x180.jpg
Victims of the KGB. The people who questioned the leadership of Stalin and got taken away or executed by the secret police, the KGB.
external image kgb-hugelogo.jpg
To me the other pigs are the people who question leadership but get silenced. They are easily swayed not to speak against people, like people who are a partner in a crime.
The Destruction Of The Windmill
external image windmill.jpeg
It was the failing of the 5 year plain which Stalin promised would make life better and easier for the Russians. However, it fell apart.
This symbolized to me that if you don't plan things out, (like...most of the things I do) it will end up failing.

Animal farm
THE BOOK

Ornwell's View
It represents the Russian Revolution, and its what Orwell believed would happen to any society because of power hungry people.
Your View
Math homework is like Napoleon. It takes over your life and time. It also makes you work harder for little rewards. The variables are the sheep, making everything more confusing. The pigs are math teachers, boxer is the people doing the homework, and the donkey is me, making cynical remarks about how stupid this homework is!

Questions~

Chapter 1 & 2

1) The animals are acting like animals by walking on four legs (or flying), not opperating machinery, living in the barn and not wearing clothes. They're acting like humans by having human emotions and talking.

2)It made the animals open their eyes to what has truly been happening to them for what it realjly is. the animals were convinced that it was a tyranny and excited about the idea about a revolt.

3) They assume that all humans are bad, and will treat them the same. They also assume all animals to want the same thing, and to treat them the same.

4)They were supposedly the most clever animals on the farm. The 'leader' also had a reputation for getting his way. Squealer was a great persuasive speaker, and Snowball was quicker in speech. They also could read and write.

5) Snowball saw those ribbons as a symbol of Mr. Jones taking advantage of the animals. They also stood for the exact opposite of what the Animal-ism stood for. Snowball was trying to get her to join to the animals in the rebellion.

6) When they got rid of Mr.Jones, they were in a state of disbelief and shock. After dreaming about it for months, they were finally free. The animals had a bonfire with all the whips and harnesses. They ran through all the fields with joy. They were excited, relieved and overjoyed to be free from Mr. and Mrs. Jones.

7) The commandment stated that everything on two legs were an enemy. To theses animals, all humans are evil, and should be considered enemies, when not every human would treat them as Mr.Jones did.

8)Marxism is when one person dictates over everything, and everything was equal. Also, everyone gets an equal share of everything. Animal-ism is like this because they all did the work and shared the product.

9) Right now, they were all working together, and all opinions were counted in a discussion. They all worked for the same reward. They had the same amount of space, and they didn't need to kill.
Old Major
Old Major

CHAPTER 3&4
1) The animals are working together, they're learning to read and write, they also have counsel that discuss matters and they all work to help support themselves.

2) The flag is green with white horns and hooves. It symbolizes the freedom of the animals from the humans. The horn symbolizes power, and the hooves symbolizes work and power. The green symbolizes the green fields of England,

3) They constantly argued about many issues and could never agree on anything.

4) Four legs good, two legs bad is the motto. It makes all humans seem horrible, and that all animals would be willing to help and/or not disturb the farm.

5) The pigs taught themselves to read and write before all the others. They took all the apples and milk saying that it was brain food and that Mr.Jones would take back the farm because the pigs couldn't orchestrate a plan without them.

6) Squealer would say that if the pigs weren't in charge, things would fall apart. He'd threaten that Mr.Jones would come back if they didn't listen.

7) They had a plan for the battle of Cowshed, and the Rebellion was just random attacks of rage. In the Rebellion, no one died, but in the battle of Cowshed, a sheep lost it's life. In the battle of Cowshed, they used mostly used violence, in the Rebellion, they just chased Mr. and Mrs. Jones away.

8) Boxer was sad, and also mad. He got a medal for 'killing' a boy when he didn't want to hurt the boy. He was angry that he was rewarded for such a terrible deed. Snowball was overjoyed because he had one thing over Napoleon, and the animals respected him more because of that medal.

9) The animals aren't really the ones holding the power, it's just the pigs holding power. They're fighting for a group of people that hold the power, when Mr. Jones was in charge, they'd risk their lives for the one person that held the power.

Chapters 5 & 6:
1) She was shirking on her work and letting the humans pet and feed her.

2)Snowball had won over the animals with his speech, but Napoleon sent dogs out after him. The animals, frightened by the scene, let Napoleon claim himself as leader above all animals.

3)

4) The animal don't have a say in anything, and are told what to do or say. Obedience and loyalty are the only things they need, and if they don't, they will get the dogs sent on them.

5) He reminds them of Jones. Yes, he hides that Napoleon is being selfish, and taking over being leader to get his way.
6) His mottos make him compliant and easy to fool because he will blindly follow these sayings without thinking about things.

7)Squealer tells them that Napoleon actually made up the plans and supported the idea, and that Snowball stole it from him. He tells them that the only reason he rejected it from Snowball was a part of a tactic.

8)The first thing he does is enable trade with the humans. Then he takes up sleeping in the house when it was stated that they were never to take up any of human habits, such as living in houses, or sleeping on beds. He also breaks the sleep on a bed rule. The animals are forced to accept it by the threatening growling of the dogs, the threat of Mr. Jones coming back, and Squealer being a very good persuasive speaker.

9) Napoleons way of getting rid of Snowball was 'tactics'.

Chapter 7 & 8
1) He uses Mr. Whymper to spread the word. He leads Mr. Whymper through a grain bin that had a cover on it so it appeared full. He also told the animals to brag in front of him.

2)They get their food rations cut off, and they starved. Nine died before they decided to give up their eggs.

3)The memory of Snowball is used to show the animals that Snowball was really evil, and everything he does and the animals in league with him are evil. He is also the scapegoat.

4)The meaning of the execution is that it's Napoleons way of life/rules or death. It gives Napoleon more power because the animals are shaken by this, and they now know that if they rebel, they WILL end up dead.

5) She does this out of longing for the time when things were good.

6)The reason Squealer gives is that it was no longer needed because it was a song of longing for a better life without humans and that it had been achieved. The real reason is that it was the song of the rebellion, so the ban of this discourages the animals from rebelling against him.

7) He makes Snowball a scapegoat, and blames him for everything. He's also lying about the humans, and how he was selling the wood.

8) It makes Napoleon seem like a good, kind, fair and true leader when in reality he is just the opposite.

Chapter 9 & 10:
1) The Spontaneous Demonstration is when they had a congratulatory party. The 'purpose' told to the animals was to recognize acheivements, but really, it was to make the pigs look better than the other animals.

2) Napoleon let Mose's return because he gave the animals hope to work harder, and he didn't diss on Napoleon. He also never took anything more than he was allowed. This is significant because

3)Boxer is admired because he is strong, kind and a hard worker. The animals believed that the pigs took him to a hospital, but really he was taken to the knackers.

4) The knacker represents the fate of people who blindly follow leaders. They will either get kill, or stabbed in the back.

5)The high class and low class or the two classes. They formed by the pigs taking care of their own and not letting the little pigs play with the other animals.

6)They built a schoolhouse for the pigglets.

Concept::
October Revolution~ When Bolshevik overthrew the Russian Government

Who was in charge? Bolshevik leader Jaan Anvelt; Czar Nicholas II
Who revolted? Bolshevik against the Russian Government.
The people were so oppressed by the harsh Russian Government, a revolt was the only way to get under their hold. They didn't have a good quality life with the Russian Government hanging over their heads.
1.7 THOUGHT PROVOKING QUESTIONS::
1) They were scared because Napoleon would kill them if they found out. Also, they weren't very bright, and they though life on the farm was fine.
2) The beasts of England song inspired the animals to rebel, and kept them inspired to fight for the farm. It also fueled their dreams of leading them selves.
3) They thought they were free from humans. They also thought they were getting more food and privileges. Also, they didn't even remember what it was like with Mr. Jones.
4) He said that it would never work, and that it was too complicated to build. He changed his mind because he felt that if he allowed the building of the windmill, the animals would trust him.
5) Napoleon was getting angry because the animals liked Snowball's plans and liked him more in general, which gave Snowball more power. Napoleon sent the dogs on him to get rid of the competition. No other animals stepped because they were too scared, and in shock about what had happened.
6) This made the animals easier to control, because they feared they'd make the wrong decision. Also, this made them think that Napoleon would ALWAYS make the right choice for all the animals. This also made it easier for them to tell the animals that their decisions were going to bring Mr. Jones.
7) No, because then he/she would only be thinking about themselves, and what they think is right for the followers. Every follower has an opinion that should be shared to reach a decision everyone is happy about. However, there are some situations were the leader has to make a decision w/o consulting the followers.
8) They were able to do this because during the night, they changed the commandments about the farmhouse, making it 'legal' for them. Squealer was able to easily convince them because he said that they needed a quiet place to work, and the animals were easily convinced.
9) The pigs told them that they needed it for their brain. The animals felt that they needed that sleep to still make great decisions for the animals. Also, the dogs were an impending threat on the animals that still questioned it.
10) He said that he could smell Snowball. Plus, he found pig tracks near the windmill that the scent lead to.
11) None of the animals could remember how Mr. Jones treated them. Plus, Clover's the optimistic on of the group, and had faith that things would get better.
12) Boxer doesn't understand what the pigs are saying, or what they mean. All he knows how to do is work, so that's what he does. He works because he can't do anything else. He also liked working because he's good at it.
13) This novel started out as animals trying to create a utopia, but it all ended badly. It changes the ideal because in this book you realize that most utopia's are going to fall, because either the people are illiterate or the person in charge becomes power hungry. It makes you think that a utopia is EVERYONE getting what they want/need for a comfortable, healthy, long, life.

The book expresses that a utopia in the book were two things: Beasts of England, and the speech Old Major gave.
Idea's
(QUINCEY & KANNON) George Orwell: Intensely opposed to totalitarianism and wrote Animal Farm symbolizes real events. He saw how totalitarianism could alters a persons' view.
