1.2 ::QUESTIONS::

1)What is a plethora?

2)Which war in Iraq are we going to focus on?

3)What is a ramification?

newspaper.jpg1.)List of Media:

Newspaper; magazines, television, internet.

2.) a.) The purposes of all media messages are to entertain, to inform, and to persuade.
3.)The media is influenced by social factors because people talk and alter the image of what the media portrayed. Also, by what the target audience is. Economic factors influence the media because if the economy is bad, they cut out crucial information to save money. When the economy is good, pretty everything gets in the newspaper. The politic factors influence the media by different beliefs in politics. People with make their side look better, or more important than the other sides.
b.) Religion might also affect these media sources as well as morals.
4.) The effect on these groups are that they get angry because these stories do not include their side. This makes other people think of them in a bad or different light with them having a say. Those who portray these sides are either biased to these people or this problem by a number if influences. Some may try to be fair, but can fail miserably.

1.4 STEP TWO

1) Iraq is portrayed as vulnerable and unorganized. Americans are portrayed as the 'knight in shining armor', saving Iraq.
2) Major Cities: Bagdad Religion: Shia Islam Government:Federal Parliamentary Republic Social Structures:
3)

Similarities:
Differences:
Slide1
They both state that the King is gone.
The one on the left makes everything in Iraq seem okay because the King is gone. The right one however, states that chaos reigns now that the King is gone.
Slide2
Both newspapers imply that the war has started.
The one on the lefts portrays Iraq as surprised that the war has begone. The right makes it as if Iraq had expected it.
Slide3
The papers both say that it is a sad day for both the U.S and Iraq.
The one on the left tells about the soldiers, and how they were captured, killed and injured. The one on the right tells about the citizen casualties and deaths.
Slide4
They both talk about the liberation of Iraq.
One states that the Iraq is liberated and seems joyous. The other one says that Baghdad Falls and has a negative spin on the situation
Slide5
They both state that the Major Battles are over
One says that all the major battles and seems that the war is almost over giving people false hopes. Another one says that Bush (the president) is now focusing on helping Syria people.
Slide6
They both say that the tyrant named Saddam is captured
One states that he was caught like a rat and being easy to capture was implied. The other one states he was taking prisoner and not much else was said.
4) This event was depicted as a sad event with all the casualties (i.e. the military and citizen casualties) with the pictures of injured military and citizens , and in the end, for the U.S. were pictures of triumph and of returning troops. However, in other countries, they were worried about what other wars we would get into, with the headlines of "Bush turns his sights on Syria"
5) How this war was portrayed greatly affected my understanding of the war. It made me think for quite a while that we were doing a good thing for the people of Iraq. We are doing that but that's not our main goal in being there. We also are doing more damage than helping in this war.

1.5 STEP THREE

1) The Newspaper editors have chosen to portray the war as a necessity. They used huge font and the articles used up the whole front page, so they wanted people to know about the importance of this war. I think when they put it on the front page, it gives it an air of importance.
2) The audience is people outside of Iraq, but mostly the people on the other side of the world. It's so people who cannot get this information by word of mouth can have some information.
3) Saddam and his follower's side are not represented in the articles. This makes their side seem immoral, or makes them the 'bad guys' without hearing why they did what they did.

1.6 STEP FOUR

1) People became paranoid about people that even looked like they could be Muslim or an Iraqi. They got teased, disrespected and bullied.
2) Yes, I think that it did affect them. The media portrayed them as bad people, and that they were the cause of 9/11. They never got their side told.
3) No, because being multicultural is being fair to ALL races and religion, not just a few. So if the people weren't fair, they aren't.
4) It made me think badly of them for a few years, until I realized that it was a few people's actions that caused 9/11, not a whole country.
5) Yes. Even though I thought that it was a few people's actions, I didn't see that 9/11 had affected Muslims and Iraqi's too. Now I realized that all people in the U.S were affected by this tragic day.
6) I think people who can't read between the lines will assume that it really was Iraq that planned this, because of the way the media put them down. The media shaped the history of this event by making it seem as if it was a group effort with Iraq to plan 9/11 and that war was the 'right' thing to do.
