“I know some of you have heard some rumors about a new type of medicine,” President Smith, “And those rumors are mostly true. A new type of medicine will hit the market in a few days to a few weeks. It’s called Life Water. It virtually eliminates the use of other medicines, nurses, doctors and hospitals! It cures any disease, even plagues and cancers! Also, it gets rid of visible signs of old age. This breakthrough is due to the wonderful mind of Dr. Acer. I know there are some disbelievers out there, so here are some stories you need to hear.”
He stepped aside and a giant screen showed many success stories while using Life Water. Soon, all of America was in a tizzy with cheer and happiness. There would be no more early deaths, and everyone would life a long, happy lives. Nobody stole, nobody grumbled over his rations, the quarreling and biting and jealousy which had been normal features of life in the old days had almost disappeared. It was the start of a utopia.
Ricky Smith stared at the body at his feet, his eyes prickling. Gemini Evans was dead on his sisters’ floor. She was one of his best friends, as well as one of his sister’s.
She had been her sparkly self until she discovered she was out of Life Water. She fretted a bit, but soon forgot about it. Suddenly, she freaked and threw chairs at both Ricky and Kristy in a rage. Before either could give her any water, she was already dead. They had figured that Life Water was addictive but they didn’t know it was that bad, or that you could die from it. What was worse was you couldn’t walk down the street without seeing people chugging it down, especially richer people. They had it with every meal. If it killed people, then the public needed to know before the same thing happened to them.
“Kristy! We need to leave.” He said at last, glancing at his blonde sister. She too was looking at Gemini, tears pooling in her hazel eyes.
“Where? What are we going to do with her?”
Ricky looked at the body and looked at the window that led to a fire escape.
“Pay Mr. Jay on the way out to lay her to rest. We have to go to dad’s office. Life Water did this. It was like she was addicted…she turned into an animal. This gives us proof Life Water does kill people.” Mr. Jay was their dad’s security guard that could be bought off easily. Ricky walked past his sister and walked down the hallway that led to the stairs. The office was on the first floor, they were on the second. It was a few doors down from the stairs, so it was a quick trip. Kristy appeared a few minutes in front of the door after Ricky got there. Their dad was out doing a public event so the White House was empty.
“Got the key brother?”
He cracked a smirk. “Of course.” He opened the office easily. On the desk centered in front of the window was a small laptop. Kristy slid into the red chair and opened up the encrypted Life Water file. She converted it to read and put it on the zip drive but not before reading a little bit.
“Ew. There’s meth in it! And a whole bunch of bad things here…it says that these things eat away at your brain and brain cells, leaving dead tissues until you become a zombie with out Life Water. That was fed to poor people and the lower classes. The one we had been given, the one rich people have been fed does less damage, and they get more.” Kristy curled her lip and closed the program. She grabbed the zip drive and wiped the computer down.
“Do you have the car keys, and is the safe house ready? Dad’s going to freak when he sees us gone. We’re also going to be wanted for making the truth available for the public. “
“Duh Ricky. I’m not stupid.” She shook her head and walked out the door.
“I am here to talk to you about Life Water!”, President Smith’s voice rang, “It has done some miraculous things, and we have everything to thank it for! I-”
“Stop lying.” Ricky stepped out from the curtain, Kristy following him. Their dad looked at them in horror. He knew he had been discovered.
“Please son, you cant! Its for the better, really! Without all those leeches out there, we could have everything!”
Ricky smirked at his dad, looking at the turned on microphone. He held out his hand which had a huge stack of papers in it. As his dad stuttered up some explanation, his hand became unclenched. The papers had the real effects of Life Water on them, and they blew into the crowd. They wouldn’t go and find the information for themselves; they didn’t have the resources.
“The truth shall set you free.” Kristy whispered as she saw her dad freeze up on the podium.
